    Leflunomide methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine

The most commonly used DMARD is methotrexate (Trexall®, Rheumatrex®, Otrexup®, Resuvo®). Other DMARDs include sulfasalazine (Azulfidine®), leflunomide (Arava®), hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil®), Cyclosporine (Neoral®, Sandimmune®), Azathioprine (Imuran®), and Apremilast (Otezla®).

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil® is used for rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Among those who were on leflunomide, four were on a single drug while one also received methotrexate. Both patients in the other group were on methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine. The onset of neuropathy was on an average 3 months range 45 days to 120 days after the initiation of leflunomide.

The doctor then kept me on my plaquenil and added Leflunomide Arava to replace the methotrexate. My mouth sores went away and I quit having the days of sickness from the methotrexate. There may be something better out there, but for me the Arava has made a big difference. I am going to have to decide in October whether to start methotrexate or arava. I currently take plaquenil, prednisone and piroxicam for my RA. I've read quite a bit on both drugs. My doctor seems to think I would need only a low dose of methotrexate to get it under control. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients.

Treating Lupus with Anti-Malarial Drugs Johns Hopkins Lupus. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more.
