Hydroxychloroquine HCQ, sold under the brand name Plaquenil among others, is a medication used for the prevention and treatment of certain types of malaria. Specifically it is used for chloroquine-sensitive malaria. Other uses include treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and porphyria cutanea tarda. It is taken by mouth. Hydroxychloroquine is considered safer than chloroquine during pregnancy and lactation. Hydroxychloroquine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and steady-state concentrations are reached after 4–6 weeks; 45% of hydroxychloroquine binds to plasma proteins that are deposited in tissues such as the liver, spleen, kidney, and lung. I was also diagnosed in August 2013 and also can't take prednisone. I was on plaquenil for 4 - 5 months and my lungs got worse, doc said plaquenil wasn't strong enough. I'm now on 10 mg/wk methotrexate, and sarcoidosis seems to be better.

WHO Model Prescribing Information Drugs Used in Parasitic. Use in pregnancy. There is no evidence that chloroquine is harmful in prophylactic doses during pregnancy.
